Introducing the SparkNotes Movie Club

Introducing the SparkNotes Movie Club

By Dan_Bergstein

Welcome, film buffs. We’re rolling out our brand spanking new Movie Club this week, and you’re invited. This will be the most amazing thing that has ever happened to the world. Better than ice cream. Better than roller coasters. Even better than frogs!

Here’s how it works. At the beginning of each month, we’ll announce a movie and give you some general background info on the film—the plot, the actors, some fun facts, stuff like that. Then you’ll have a few weeks to watch the flick on your own, or watch it along with me and anyone else on Facebook. I’ll tell you on what specific day and time I’ll watch the movie, and then I’ll type out comments as we all watch.

Towards the end of the month, I’ll post an article on the movie, containing overall thoughts on the film and questions for you guys, in hopes of getting a conversation started in the comments section. You can tell us what you liked about the movie. What you hated about the movie. Why you thought the book was better. Why you cried at the end. Why you cried at the beginning. What candy paired well with the film. Whatever's on your mind. The idea is to make this more interactive than Blogging Twilight. We want to read what you have to say.

The Movie Club will focus on all types of films: comedy, drama, action, horror, romance, documentaries about origami, etc. We’ll cover current movies, movies you may have missed, classic movies, bad movies…pretty much any movie out there.

First up, Cannibal Holocaust.

Kidding. Kidding. Because we don’t want angry letters from parents or your protective older brother, we’ll stick with movies that are less…nightmarishly horrific. Our first film is "The Princess Bride."

This fantasy/comedy/adventure/romance is one of our favorites, and we can’t think of a better way to kick things off than by revisiting the 1987 classic. If you haven’t seen the movie, you’re in for a treat, and we’re jealous of you. There’s nothing quite like watching The Princess Bride for the first time.

Based on the book by William Goldman, "The Princess Bride" tells the story of swashbuckling hero as he attempts to save Princess Buttercup. It’s filled with typical adventure story clichés, from giants to pirates, but all done with a tongue planted firmly in the cheek. It’s a parody of sorts. But it’s also a prime example of that thing which it is mocking. So not only is it poking fun at fantasy adventure stories, but it’s also a darn good fantasy adventure story itself. That’s what makes it so brilliant.

So buy, borrow, or rent "The Princess Bride" between now and April 28th, when we’ll post the discussion article. And watch along with me on Thursday, April 22nd at 8:00 p.m. EST over at Facebook. In the meantime, if you have any movie suggestions, let us know in the comments section. (First person to say "Hannah Montana: The Movie" will get shoved.)

How excited are you for the Movie Club???
