Top 10 Cinema Sidekicks

Top 10 Cinema Sidekicks

We recently saw the rich guy from Pretty in Pink when we were getting lunch across the street. He looked really serious, and we didn't like his shirt. We agree with Woktaker—Duckie's better. —SparkNotes editors

The other day I was bored and staring at my keyboard when I realized how often in movies the real amazing-ness comes from the sidekicks, not the protagonists. So many movies would have sucked if not for the lightheartedness supplied by the main character's best buddy. Below, I have composed a list of my top sidekicks.

1. Duckie from Pretty in Pink: I literally bawled at the end of this movie, not because I was happy for dumb Molly Ringwald, but because she didn't end up with the wonderful, magnificent, and overall hilarious Duckie. Duckie, who loved her from the beginning, was ignored for a rich idiot. Duckie is the real star of that movie.

2. Abu from Aladdin: Aladdin would have been in so much trouble if it weren't for Abu. He'd be starving on the streets or still locked up in the dungeons of the palace. Technically, you could say that because of Abu, Aladdin and Jasmine got married, the genie broke free, and monkeys were able to escape from the zoo. Good job, Abu. Good job.
Quote: "Abu!"

3. Ned Gold from 17 Again: [spoiler alert] The nerd who gets the girl, the man who gives hope to single parents with crushes on their child's principal, the one, the only, Ned Gold. He's just amazing.
Quote: "I think our hands just made a baby."

4. Willard Hewitt from Footloose: Not only do Ren and Willard have the best way of becoming friends ever (insulting each other and then laughing and eating lunch together), but he is such a funny guy in his own right. From learning to dance (quite possibly one of the best scenes in this movie), to getting into fights to protect Rusty's "virtue," he is a great guy, and Ren would never have been able to accomplish anything without him.
Quote: Ren: You like Men At Work?
Willard: What men?
Ren: Men at Work.
Willard: Well, where do they work?
Ren: No, they're a music group.
Willard: Well, what do they call themselves?
Ren: Oh no! What about The Police?
Willard: What about 'em?
Ren: You ever heard them?
Willard: No, but I seen them.
Ren: Where, in concert?
Willard: No, behind you.

5. Kronk from The Emperor's New Groove: It has been my desire for a very long time to meet the voice behind this man. He is completely hilarious. If you don't laugh at his antics (hehe, I used the word "antics"), then there is something wrong with you. I bet you thought that High School Musical 2 was better than the first one. Freak.
Quote: "Riiiiiiiiight."
