Hanging Out with Jazzy: My Favorite Fictional Secret-Heroes!!!
You guys know Jazzy, right? AKA villanous_mwaha? Welcome back to her Thursday column! —SparkNotes editors
In every fantasy book, there is a main character who usually gets all the credit, praise, and swooning women when he "saves the day." But does he deserve all the glory? No, dear Sparklers! No he is not! For there is always a sideline character, without whom the world would be, well, dead. And so this article is to commemorate those unmentioned heroes, and remember those who died in the process of doing heroic deeds.
*WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS!!!*
Name: Severus Snape
Book: The Harry Potter series
Snape is no doubt my favorite character in all of the Harry Potter books and will always be the hero in my eyes. He protected Harry from before the books began, all the way to the very end. No matter how spiteful and cruel he seemed, he was always a romantic, desperately mourning his unrequited love, which, had things gone the way I wanted them to, would have meant HE was Harry’s father. I am going to abandon this subject before I start crying, which will happen rather soon, but I will leave you with his dying line: "Look at me."
If you understand and still don’t think that is the most romantic thing EVER, you have no soul.
Name: Emmett the almighty!!!!
Book: The Twilight saga…………. –.-
I think anyone who is a true Sparkler will understand the meaning of this, and to be honest, it is true! Without Emmett, where would Bella be? (Well, she might be dead, and maybe that's not such a bad thing.) She would not have had the chance to be saved by Jacob, seeing as it was Emmett who took Eddie hunting; she would not have someone amazing to look up to. And seriously, who else is gonna light cigars with a machine gun?!
Name: Sam Gamgee
Book: The Lord of the Rings
Well, who got the ring to the top of Mount Doom? To be honest, it wasn’t Frodo. Sam saved him from Shelob, Sam rescued him from the orcs, and Sam even carried him up the damn mountain! Did he take any of the glory? No. Say no more.
Name: Neville Longbottom
Book: The Harry Potter series
Yes, I know, Harry Potter again, but with some books there are just too many characters that show hero potential! Let’s think about what Neville has done: risked his life as a child, suffered the disinterest of his parents, been bullied in school and come out stronger, picked a fight with a death eater, pulled Griffindor’s sword out of the hat, killed Nagini—seriously, my list could go on and on! Basically, I think Neville is more of a hero and an inspiration than Harry EVER was, or will be. For all we know, HE could be the chosen one…
Name: Each sideline hero that is brutally murdered
Book: A Series of Unfortunate Events
There are too many to list!! I suppose the main ones to point out would be the two Quagmire triplets and the handyman who survive as they float away in their mobile air home. Only problem is, they’re probably dead, too, seeing as it can’t come down. Lemony Snicket does have a habit of executing all popular characters. And that is why we love to hate him, or hate to love him?
Name: Benvolio
Play: Romeo and Juliet
This guy is actually pretty great! If people had bothered to listen to him, just maybe there could have been more than 5 characters alive at the end! Benvolio tells everyone to stop fighting, and what do they do? Fight. He witnesses all and tells the prince, and what thanks does he get? None. He asks a randomer on the street if he can borrow their umbrella and what does he get? A swift kick in the groinal area. This poor guy does not have it easy.
