P.S. We Love Clichés

P.S. We Love Clichés

It's already February (!!!!!!!!), which means the pink-and-reddest holiday of all is right around the corner. synchrogirl117 kicks off our Valentine's Day coverage with a post we love so much, we want to spill a drink on it. —SparkNotes editors

We all know EVERYTHING on TV and in the movies is true. Therefore, we're 97.2% sure the following romantic comedy clichés will happen on Valentine's Day. Here's how to use them to your advantage to find a date or impress your SO!

1. Cliché: Spilled drink
Happens in: The Last Song, Notting Hill

Ever noticed that if one character spills a drink on another character, the spiller and the spillee end up together? Even if they'd never met before that? Clearly, if you spill an icee all over your crush, you don't need to panic or run away crying with embarrassment. Instead, flash him/her a charming smile and offer to help clean up. (Not in a creepy way, though. That could just lead to all kinds of awkward situations.) You'll be together forever!

2. Cliché: Love letters
Happens in: Dear John, P.S. I Love You
Awwww! (That was your cue to sigh and gaze into the distance.) Love letters are adorable, and always work in movies. So write one to the person you like! They'll definitely fall in love with you after that!

3. Cliché: Dorka Awkwardpants + Sexy Dreamboat = Love
Happens in: Twilight, I Love You, Beth Cooper
Don't give up hope, nerds of the world.  If whiny do-nothing Bella Swan can snag that jerk Edward, you can definitely get that snobby cheerleader or egomaniac hottie to date you! 'Cause you know you'll totally relate to each other and understand each other. And your Valentine's Day will be absolutely perfect!

4. Cliché: If you love someone, you have to let them go
Happens in: Beauty and the Beast, What Happened in Vegas, The Proposal
Scenario: Guy and girl have a not-so-good relationship. But when they actually start to fall in love, guy lets girl go so she will be happy. But she comes back because she loves him! And then the evil guy falls off the castle and the cute little teacup turns into an even cuter little boy! (Yes, this is Beauty and the Beast. Don't judge me, Disney movies are the best!)

The question here is how to apply this to your own life. I mean, assuming none of you actually have girls locked in a castle or own talking furniture (although that would be awesome)...Here's how: when your girlfriend opts to go to the mall with her friend rather than go out with you on Valentine's Day, don't throw a fit. Just let her go. She'll definitely come back after realizing how much she loves you. If you're lucky, she'll even bring you back a soft pretzel! Then you can go to your castle and tell your armchair about your great day.

5. Cliché: Love song
Happens in: Moulin Rouge, every Disney movie ever

Now here's something romantic for Valentine's Day! Why not sing to your girl/boyfriend in front of the whole school? 'Cause that would be totally non-embarrassing and disaster-proof.

6. Cliché: Kiss in the rain
Happens in: A Cinderella Story, The Notebook, every other love story in the whole world

Since this happens in so many love stories, I'm assuming it's supposed to be romantic. Kiss your SO in the rain on Valentines Day (even if it's freezing cold). What? It's not raining? Oh, my. Your relationship is doomed, then. Sorry about that. Happy Valentine's Day!

Which romantic comedy cliché makes your heart go pitter-pat?
