Typical New Year's resolutions look something like this: I'm going to lose 30 lbs. I'm going to stop drinking coffee. I'm going to save $10,000.
They're not bad ideas. They're just unrealistic.
Here are some resolutions you might consider instead—choices that are fun and totally doable:
- Go somewhere you've never been before. If you can't decide, throw a dart at a map (even if it's just a city map).
- Make a time capsule and bury it somewhere.
- Collect something. It doesn't have to be stamps and coins—it could be one pebble from every place you visit, or every business card you spot. At the end of next year, take stock of all the places you've been.
- Try one sport/game you've never tried before. Doesn't matter if it's Scrabble or curling.
- Have your fortune told. Or get your palm read. Or use a Ouija board. Any activity that purports to predict the future.
- Write a letter to someone famous. An actual, written-on-paper-and-dropped-in-mailbox letter. Send it. Even if you get a form letter back, keep it.
- If you've never volunteered before, volunteer for one day. It doesn't matter where or what. Just do it. It's only a day.
- Try one food that terrifies you. Frogs' legs, for instance.
- Go into a clothing store and pick an outfit that is totally not you. Something you would look ridiculous in. Go to the changing room and try it on. See yourself in the mirror. Nobody needs to know but you. Feel free to laugh heartily.
- Learn to say "hello" in five languages.
- Write one song. Even if it's just the lyrics. Hum the melody in the shower.
- Finish one late-week crossword puzzle. Even if you have to look up the answers.
- Take a candid photograph of a stranger without him/her noticing.
- Learn 10 new jokes. Tell each one once to somebody who's never heard it.
Too easy? Double the recipe.
