Parties for Picky Eaters
For something so basic, eating is strangely particular. Everyone has his or her likes and dislikes when it comes to food, but there are some people who take personal eating preferences into the realm of pickiness. Be it for health reasons, religious demands, or just plain old taste, being picky about food is something that some folks can’t help. If you’re one of those picky eaters, you know that when you go to a party, your eating habits can become an issue. Here’s how to deal with it gracefully:
- Tell the host—Warning the host about your preferences will let him/her plan for your needs, if he can, and also prevent any hurt feelings if you don’t try his spinach soufflé.
- Offer to bring something—Bringing a food that you like is the only way to guarantee there will be grub to satisfy your standards. But remember that the item you bring isn’t just for you. Take along enough of your dish to share with the crew. You might end up taking back a lot of leftovers, but your vegan chili could be a surprise hit!
- Don’t expect a separate menu—While the host should be gracious about your needs, don’t expect him or her to tailor the entire menu to you. You might have to only eat sides if you’re a vegetarian or pick off the cheese if you’re lactose intolerant. Be flexible and eat what you can.
- Snack beforehand—It’s hard to have fun when you’re hungry. And if you’re super picky, there’s a chance that nothing on the menu could satisfy your specifications. Even when you alert the host, sometimes people don’t realize that mac and cheese means Easy Mac, not some fru-fru gruyere and camembert concoction. Snacking right before is a good hedge against temporary starvation.
Party on, picky eaters! Eat (some stuff), drink, and be merry!
