This recession is killing us. Babysitting money isn’t what it used to be, and your allowance has probably seen some major budget cuts. Even with this restricted money flow, you’ve managed to get your parents the ultimate gift—a coupon book for free hugs—but that’s probably not going to cut it with your friends. You’re going to have to get creative if you want to give them something special this holiday season.
Here are three frugal ideas to get those gift-giving juices flowing:
- Breakfast in first period—Bring in a special breakfast for your besties the week before winter break. Arrange it on their first period desks with some holiday-colored plastic cutlery and a card. It’s not exactly breakfast in bed, but everyone's still half-asleep first period, so it's almost as good.
- Get Out of Fight Free coupons—While free hug coupons won’t be appreciated by your buds, free fight-enders will. Do you and your bud practically need a mediator when ordering a pizza because he likes Hawaiian and you’re an extra cheese traditionalist? Give him a coupon for one pineapple pizza, end of discussion. Do you always want to see action movies, but he’s a comedy guy? Give him a coupon guaranteeing that you’ll go see the next Judd Apatow movie whine-free, even if Transformers 3 is playing in the next theater.
- Nail polish and a manicure—A bottle of nail polish can cost as little as $1.99. Buy a trendy color—purple and teal are in right now, but red and green could be cute for the holidays, too—and enclose a certificate for a free homemade manicure. Turn your bathroom into a spa one afternoon, with lotions, soak bowls, and scented candles, and have all of your friends over to paint them pretty.
