If you don't know about Awkward Turtle, you're missing out. Luckily, Sparkler hannakathryn is here to explain! —SparkNotes Editors
You walk up to your friends with a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. "Howdy y'all!" you chirp. You're in a very good mood today. But then, you realize that Jenny and Billy are glowering at each other. The couple isn't acting lovey dovey, like usual. Everyone looks at you with a straight face and a few people are even shaking their heads.
"AWKWARD TURTLE!" you yell, making a turtle out of your hands and smiling. For a few seconds, there's absolute silence, and then the entire group bursts into laughter. Jenny and Billy hug and apologize for whatever happened, and you and your friends begin singing, "Say Hey (I Love You)" (such a happy song), and dance down the school hallways.
The awkward turtle, invented by some middle school genius, is a lifesaver for all socially awkward moments. Those silent times where no one has anything to say, or when that extremely annoying person joins the circle and begins to chatter mindlessly. Randomly shouting "Awkward Turtle" can save friendships and relationships, and can easily strike up some laughter.
If you haven't heard about the awkward turtle yet (you poor, deprived child), I suggest you learn it, tell all your friends about it, and start a new trend at your school. However, do not use it with teachers unless they are the super-cool type. They could feel really insulted and disrespected. Plus, you wouldn't want them to mistake it for a hip new substitute for curse words.
To execute the awkward turtle, follow these steps:
Step one: Put one hand on top of the other, palms down.
Step two: Wiggle your thumbs so that they look like they are swimming.
Step three: Say "Awkward Turtle!"
People have come up with other awkward animals, such as the awkward turkey, jellyfish, giraffe, and even awkward Loch Ness Monster. Come up with your own and use it in those wonderful awkward moments. Some may call it immature, but who's in a hurry to grow up, anyway?
Do you use Awkward Turtle?
