Sparklers, we’ve been hard at work supplying Halloween costume tips and answering your most pressing trick-or-treat questions (the answer is “yes”) while preparing for one of the year’s most fun holidays. But we would be remiss if we neglected one hugely important part of any Halloween festivity: the best Halloween songs to play at your party. We looked in our haunted attic, in the creepy crawlspace under the stairs, and on iTunes. Our grueling journey left us with the following unholy collection. As always, feel free to make your own additions:
“I’m a Ghost”–Ted Leo & the Pharmacists
Most movies and works of literature paint the whole ghost experience as a miserable, lonely slough. It's a good thing there are some talented musicians doing their part to make the ghosting thing sound like a lot of fun.
“Halloween”–Siouxsie & the Banshees
Siouxsie Sioux has always been a go-to Halloween costume for anyone with a surplus of pancake makeup and eye shadow. So it's no wonder that she belted out the best song ever that has “Halloween” in the title.
“The Monster Mash”–Bobby “Boris” Pickett & the Crypt-Kickers
Everyone’s second favorite Halloween song. It might be clichéd, but it never fails to put people in a good mood.
“Werewolves of London” – Warren Zevon
Another classic that still makes people smile. Even your parents will rock out to it. (Your parents love Warren Zevon, btw.)
“Night of the Living Baseheads”–Public Enemy
This song is technically not about monsters (it's about why you shouldn’t sell drugs), but the positive message is appropriate for the Halloween season. And Chuck D can strike fear into anyone's heart.
“Tuff Ghost”–The Unicorns
Who hasn't wanted to walk around on Halloween saying, “I’m a strong dead man who’s looking out for himself”?
“Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)”–David Bowie
Monsters (and creeps) don’t get much hipper than this. And dressing as different phases of David Bowie’s career could provide you with Halloween costumes for the next 20 years.
“Padding Ghost”–Dan Deacon
Most. Adorable. Ghost. Ever. (The music video is here)
“Thriller”–Michael Jackson
We couldn’t leave this off the list, and if you’re throwing a Halloween party, neither can you. You should also really watch this: Potential awesome thing of the week material.
What are you favorite Halloween-related songs? Did we miss one?
