The Rules of Old School Dating
Most dates nowadays are informal group hangs or we-both-pay setups. But what happens when you want to go on a traditional type of date? Sparkler xXx_lola_xXx has advice for making an old-school dream date come true. —SparkNotes Editors
Guys, ever wondered how to impress girls? I have decided to give out the secrets to success for executing a traditional date.
Asking her out
When you ask her out, you want to seem confident, but not too confident. We frown on that. I personally say no to guys who act like they are doing me a favor by asking me out. You might want to practice a few times (with your friends if you're brave enough to deal with their endless teasing, or maybe a female buddy so you can get her input) until you get it right.
Appearance
This is important not only on the night of the date, but when you ask your girl out. Both times, you want to make sure you don't stink, have food in your teeth, look like you just rolled in hay, etc. Unless you are in PE when you ask her out, use a cologne—but make sure it isn't too strong, because if it's so strong that it gives us a headache or we feel like we're choking, you might get the door slammed in your face.
Gifts
It's my opinion that the real way to a woman's heart is through gifts that show you're thinking about her. Whether it's before the date or during, get her something. Anything. I prefer chocolates, mini balloons, flowers, little stuffed animals, or jewelry (the real stuff, although we understand if you can't get us diamonds). Plus, she'll have a physical token to remember you by when the date is over.
Compliments
You must always compliment her. When she first opens the door, say stuff like, "Wow, you look beautiful," and during the date, call her pretty, funny, smart, sweet, or anything that pops into your head that fits her and can pass as a compliment. She probably spent three hours getting ready, so she'll really appreciate this.
Food
Plan a date around great food. Unless you are deathly allergic to her favorite type of food, go to a restaurant that has it. If you go to a movie theater, get her a drink, candy, and popcorn. Don't use trays; share the bowl. It's a good way to bond.
Fun
Make sure the date is one to remember and one she will love. If you want her to go out with you again, you kind of need to make it fun. Take her bowling, mini golfing, to the movies, or to a restaurant with an exciting vibe.
Politeness
You must be like those nerdy guy you see in old movies. Open all doors for her, pull her chair out for her when she sits, and smile at her, don't leer. Good manners go a long way.
