Homecoming Song Alternatives
Sparkler raj101 is ready to shake up homecoming with a little Tegan and Sara. Enjoy! —SparkNotes Editors
There are lots of high school experiences people feel are important to have, and homecoming is one of them. For some, it's regarded as one of the best parts of high school. But what if it's all set to the wrong music?
The official homecoming song has become less of a statement about the students in the school and their identity, and more about lazily choosing a cheesy mainstream song. One year, my school had "I Believe I Can Fly" as its homecoming song. I mean, honestly, the people who choose the homecoming song need to step it up.
Here are a few recommendations for a more contemporary, identifiable homecoming song:
1. "Shine On," by the Kooks
It's infectious, it's light, it's sweet; it's not something that will make you want to throw up when they play it at your homecoming dance.
2. "Electric Feel," by MGMT
The video takes place at a killer party in the woods—isn't that just perfect for homecoming?
3. "Crash the Party," by OK Go
You know you want this one to be your homecoming song. It's counter-cultural and fun wrapped into one.
4. "Across the Universe," by Rufus Wainwright
This song has a very dreamy, air-like sound that makes you want to sway. If you're having any doubts, consider the fact that Rufus Wainwright is not capable of making an ugly-sounding song.
5. "Back in Your Head," by Tegan & Sara
Finally! Your dreams have been realized: Tegan and Sara for your homecoming song! Sure it's a reach (come on student council!), but you only live once.
What would your ideal homecoming song be?
