We never thought we’d say this, but here at SparkNotes, we’re awfully glad that you guys are going back to school next week. Not only because we’re anxious to help you study up for the SAT, write some kickass essays, and decipher once and for all just WHAT Shakespeare is on about when he jokes about “maidenheads,” but because, let’s face it, sometimes you guys get bored during the summer. And when you do, sometimes you end up casting about for something, anything, to fill the void. And sometimes that’s okay, but sometimes, you guys go absolutely barking mad and end up smack in the middle of Crazy Town.
Like, for instance, the group of Tennessee teenagers who got so bored that they decided to start their own fight club…and then got arrested for assault, prize-fighting, and disturbing the peace when one of them put videos of their shenanigans up on YouTube. (For the love of Mike, don’t they know that the first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about fight club?! Tyler Durden is gonna be peeved.)
Of course, we know how hard it can be to occupy your time during these last days of summer, and we’re here to help with a list of clubs that’ll alleviate your boredom but will not land you in the cold, gray, joyless land of juvie. Ready?
Light Club: Meet weekly to discuss the exciting aspects of manmade and natural light. Have everyone bring a favorite lamp for show and tell. Compete with other members to see who can stare at the sun the longest.
Spite Club: A club where members meet to hold grudges against people for things that happened a really long time ago. Perfect for nursing your angst over that time in second grade when Justin Waffleface stole a Twix bar from your backpack and nobody would believe you.
Height Club: Compete with other members to see who can grow the tallest. Start every meeting by gathering at the “Wall of Tallitude,” where everyone stands up straight with a ruler laid flat on their heads (no cheating!) while the club president makes the official height mark. Play exciting games like “Pin the tail on the short guy.”
