First Day of High School? Pshhh, It Was A Breeze!

My first day of high school was Monday, August 10th. I know, sucks, right? It’s my freshman year, and I was very stressed in the days leading up to the 10th.

Before I begin to tell you about my day, I think I should tell you that my school is huge. There are two stories and about 50 bazillion sets of stairs. If I can survive in a school as big as this one, you can survive a day in a smaller one. And if it’s bigger, well, then, more power to ya!

My day started with my alarm failing to go off. But, lucky for me, I was too anxious to sleep, so I was already awake. After a wonderful breakfast of toaster waffles and as much syrup as I could fit on my plate, it was time to go. Books were spilling out of my backpack, and we don’t get our lockers until Friday, so there was nowhere to put them. Lots of people had their backpacks, but the upperclassmen didn’t. Would you follow the example your fellow freshman are setting, or the one set by seniors?

As I stepped out of the car with my gym bag full of binders in tow, someone with a megaphone (could have been the principal, or just some random person off the street trying to confuse us) shouted at us that instead of going right to first period, we were to report to study hall to get a finalized schedule.

This was not good news for me. I had a map of the school with a nice little line marking my path from the front door to my math class. Now I had to locate a room that I had no idea even existed. The room number was 1238, so logically you would think it’s located in the 1200 hall, which should be next to the 1100 hall and the 1300 hall. After much frantic searching, I discovered there is no 1200 hall between 1100 and 1300. (Though according to the map, that’s exactly where it is.) Luckily, a friend wandered my way and managed to point me in the right direction.

Everything was going well. I got through second period, third, fourth, and then came fifth. Engineering class might not sound like a class a girl would take, but then I’m not like most girls. In the back of the room, I picked a desk and watched students file in, one by one. Guy after guy. Not a single girl. Not. One. Even the teacher was a guy! And to make things worse, my 10th grade neighbor (who is my ex-best friend’s brother, and sided with his sister in what I’m just going to call “The Fight”) sat only a few desks in front of me! Even though this sounds like the worst possible scenario for a first day, I got through it without a hitch.

Lunch was the part of the day I'd really been dreading. I’ve heard that who you sit with on your first day defines the next years of your life. WRONG. No one cares about where you sit but you. The lunch line was slow, so by the time I had my food, the only seats left were on the floor. I spotted some friends on the other end of the room, and ate my lunch with them without feeling like it was going to define my high school existence indefinitely. Lunch is not something to stress over.

Sixth and seventh period blew by, and I was freaking out about finding my bus. Looking back, I don’t even know what I was worried about! I climbed on, and that was that! Over and done! All that stressing I had done the night before was for nothing!

If I can do it, and if millions of other freshman all over the country can do it, there’s no doubt that you can do it, too! And once you get the first day over with, all you can do is enjoy the next 179 days, because the toughest one is already over.

What was your first day of high school like?
