The worldwide music web is loaded with intelligent blogs that feature insightful commentary and large, engaged communities. (Yes, including SparkLife! In fact, in the category of audience participation, we think we stack up pretty well against any URL on the internet. You guys are never shy to post comments and nearly always have worthwhile things to say.)
We wanted to let you know about a few places we like to visit to keep tabs on the latest music insider picks, industry news, free downloads, and tour updates. And as always, we’d love to hear where you go for your online music fix. You know, after you read SparkLife.
Stereogum
This is a daily (sometimes twice-daily) stop for us. Stereogum covers breaking music news, typically skewed along indie rock lines. Thanks be to God, however, it rarely seems hipper-than-thou in tone. It also features the wittiest and most in-the-know commenting community this side of SparkLife.
Fluxblog
This MP3 blog, which was founded seven years ago, typically showcases tracks by brainy, experimental indie bands. On the homepage now are artists ranging from Mum to St. Vincent to U-God.
Brooklyn Vegan
Sure, it’s New York-centric, but really, aside from the daily list of live New York shows, all of the info here applies to anyone who likes new-release information and indie rock scuttlebutt.
Music for Robots
In vivid, irreverent prose, Music For Robots chronicles the latest in experimental and electronic music. Impress your friends and enemies by being in-the-know about these peripheral acts.
Arjan Writes
This isn't the most aesthetically pleasing site, but Arjan Writes is a worthwhile portal into the pop and pop-alternative genres, with embedded videos, remixes, mashups, and (occasionally) free downloads galore. There’s also an international bent here, especially toward artists from the UK.
Myuu-Zikk
Essential and aesthetically pleasing. This top-notch blog puts you ahead of the curve, introducing artists via embedded videos and links to new artists' websites, lastfm sites, and MySpace pages. Phonetically awesome.
iLounge
A bit different from the other sites listed here, iLounge features, you guessed it, the latest in tech gossip regarding the iPod and iTunes.
Songs You Used to Love
This taut blog is a blast—from the past. Every post is simply a link to a song from the days of yore. Even if those days stretch all the way back to, say, the late 90s. This one is a lot of fun to browse (there's even a random button).
