Old Movies That Are Still Fun to Watch

Sparkler chocoflakken is a connoisseur of old films, and has the following recommendations for fellow movie-loving Sparklers! —SparkNotes Editors

As the summer winds down, you're probably incredibly bored of being bored. If you're in the mood for movies but you've already seen Transformers and HP each three times, why not check out some old movies? (And there's a bonus: All of these movies are OK for everyone to watch, even little kids. Who said good, funny entertainment had to be offensive or suggestive?)

The first category I recommend is black and white movies. YES, they are good! Believe me, the jokes are still relevant. They spoke English back then, too. Just imagine some pretty colors if you really need to. Some GREAT ones are:

1. Anything with Jimmy Stewart! Especially Mr. Smith goes to
Washington
, It's a Wonderful Life, and Harvey.

2. Anything with Cary Grant. Some of my favorites are The Philadelphia Story (which also has Stewart), Bringing Up Baby, and The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer. I'm a little bit in love with Grant. Shame he's dead.

The following is a clip from The Philadelphia Story.

3. All the Thin Man movies, with William Powell and Myrna Loy—intriguing, witty mystery of a kind that isn't often seen now.

4. The Marx brothers movies are the funniest thing I have ever seen. Have you ever heard the line "One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got there, I don't know"? Well, Groucho Marx said it first. And that's not even one of the funniest jokes in the movies.

And then there's musicals. Even if you don't like singing, you can still enjoy watching one. My favorite is Guys and Dolls. Other greats are:

1. Singing in the Rain

2. Sound of Music

3. My Fair Lady

4. Brigadoon

5. The Wizard of Oz

6. The Music Man

And if these don't appeal to you, why not gather the girls (or guys) and watch all your old Disney movies? Some of my favorites are the ones made in the 90s (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Tarzan, Pocahontas, Hercules, Mulan, etc.) and old classics like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. Oh, and if you haven't seen Enchanted yet, go watch it.  Today.
