You Sing So Well...in the Shower

By Matt_Hunziker

Singing in the shower is a cliche for a reason: it's really fun to do. You’ve probably noticed that when you’re between lather and rinse, you can croon like Sinatra or preach like Bono without failing like Hung, and maybe you’ve wondered why. The answer is: science! (Cue the school filmstrip.)

As this website explains in colorful detail, the hard surfaces in your shower and bathroom act like a private studio engineer, making your voice sound fuller and more powerful, and even smoothing over your mistakes when you don’t hit quite the right note. It’s like having a million-dollar recording studio that smells like apricot body wash! It seems wasteful not to take advantage of a situation like that, so we suggest getting in touch with your inner Pavarotti at every available opportunity.

The obvious question: What are your favorite songs to belt out in the shower? We’ve thrown together a list of our own favorites, from the attainable to the ambitious, but we're most interested in your set list.

The Beach Boys — “You Still Believe In Me
Remember how your shower smooths over your mistakes when you don’t hit quite the right note? That comes in really handy here.

Annie — “Heartbeat
Singing in the shower is about confessions and big emotions (we think). This song has plenty of both.

Meatloaf — “I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)
This song is more funny or scary than it is good, but if you can't be funny and scary in the shower, where CAN you be funny and scary??

The Magnetic Fields — “The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side
A silly love song so cute it sounds like it was written while singing into a shampoo bottle.

Aretha Franklin — “Respect
This is the perfect wake-up song if you’re brave enough to attempt it. Let us know how it goes.

David Bowie — “Life on Mars?
The ultimate challenge: Can you nail those high notes, fake the accent, and keep your makeup from running?

What are your greatest shower hits?
