Would You Rather Be Hot or Cold?
Summer heat/humidity forces us to address an important life question: would you rather be extremely hot or extremely cold? Sweltering heat waves always make us fantasize about diving into a pile of snow. Of course, when it’s below zero, being fried under a desert sun seems the better option.
So is it better to endure heatstroke or hypothermia? Let's consider the following crucial situations:
Drinking beverages
Is it better to curl up with a mug of hot chocolate during a snowstorm or to drown yourself in lemonade after a balmy game of softball? Sorry, Old Man Winter—summer triumphs when it comes to refreshing beverages. Nothing beats the feeling of cool water/lemonade/iced tea sliding down your throat when the heat is squeezing your chest like a vice. Hot cocoa in winter doesn’t measure up to a cool drink when you're dying of thirst. But remember the example of Mr. Ron Burgundy and don’t bother with the milk on a hot day.
Sleeping
Is it worse to wake up shivering or sweating? Winter wins this round. Even if you the freezing cold makes your teeth chatter, it’s a lovely sensation to curl up in a big puffy blanket. Trying to sleep while sweating, however, is like trying to sleep during a heavy metal concert. It just doesn’t happen.
Of course, if you have A/C, this isn’t a concern for you. And we’re very jealous.
Consuming coffee
Conventional logic would say coffee is better during the winter, but we say the coffee experience is actually better during summer. Aficionados prefer their java warm, but most of us go to Starbucks/Peet’s/Caribou looking for a sugar rush. And iced caramel macchiatos are like milkshakes with a kick.
Trying to look attractive
Do people look more appealing during the summer or winter? This one seems a no-brainer (less clothes + more tan = badabing!!) but remember what happens when it gets reeeeeally hot: Sweat City. If perspiring around your crush wasn’t already a problem, just throw in the hot sun and things get gross faster than you can say, "OMG, I think I forgot to put on deodorant this morning." Of course, my mom asserts, “Women don’t sweat, they glow,” but try using that logic during 90F (32C) degree weather.
Ultimately, however, it’s easier to look fashionable during summer simply because you don’t have to take off ten million layers of clothing each time you arrive somewhere. But this one is a tough call….
