What’s the Deal with Chick Flicks?

Sparkler WishYouWereMe isn't immune to the lure of chick flicks, and in this post she offers some explanations about why they're so addicting. Enjoy! —SparkNotes Editors

Life ain’t ever gonna be a chick flick.

So why do we still watch these movies that make us feel warm and fuzzy for about ten minutes, and then sorry for ourselves for the next ten days? The Proposal, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Two Weeks Notice, 27 Dresses, Ghost of Girlfriends Past, Just Like Heaven...why are chick flicks like these so popular?

REASON #1: The guy/girl in this is soooo hot
Let’s face it, everyone looks good in these movies. They are all skinny/muscular and have awesome clothes, great jobs, sports cars, perfect hair...you get the picture. I mean, have you ever watched a movie about two unattractive people falling in love? Didn’t think so. Even if one was made, it wouldn’t exactly be a box office smash.

REASON #2: You wish your life were like this
The truth is, we all live our dream lives through these actors and actresses (who don’t really possess the perfect fairytale lives either) for two hours and then have to switch back to reality and feel sorry for ourselves. Who knows? If we got out more, we might actually get lucky and land that close-to-perfect person.

REASON #3: You have nothing better to do
If you've seen one chick flick, you've seen ‘em all. Let me break down the plot for you: boy meets girl, boy chases girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl because of a misunderstanding, boy and girl make up, boy and girl ride off into the sunset on their unicorn.

You do have something better to do than watch the same movie over and over: play outside, go swimming, hang out, read SparkNotes, watch another type of movie…

REASON #4: Your girlfriend wants to see it for one of the reasons above
Do yourself a favor and talk her into seeing a movie from another genre instead. Why? Because if she watches a chick flick, she'll get so annoyed that you aren’t like Zac Efron/Edward Cullen, she might actually dump you on the spot.

You could take her to a comedy. Laughing always brings people together (wink wink). But, by far, your best bet is a scary movie. There is nothing like being a source of comfort and protection as your GF has the bejeezers scared out of her.

REASON #5: Your boyfriend wants to see it for one of the reasons above...
Wow, good for you. It's rare to meet a guy who actually wants to see a chick flick. Where did you get him? Ebay? Facebook (in that case, check if he actually exists and be careful)?

Watching a chick flick with a willing boyfriend could actually be good for your relationship, provided you don’t expect your boyfriend to suddenly become perfect after the movie (see reason #4).
