“You’ll love it!”
How many times have you heard those three little words? It seems that whenever a friend discovers some new series, he won’t shut up about it until he drags you into his obsession. Occasionally some of those series are actually pretty decent, but most of the time I end up disappointed. Each series may be fine by itself, but the pop-culture chaos surrounding it is so great that the series has no chance of living up to the hype.
Here's my list of over-hyped series:
- Indiana Jones—This is the perfect example of a series overstaying its welcome. In the fourth movie, one of the most-remembered scenes is where Indy survives a NUCLEAR BLAST in a FRIDGE that was probably on sale at Sears. Thus, the infamous phrase “Nuking the Fridge” was born, meaning that the series has completely lost its touch. The first three Indy movies were fantastic, but the whole premises of aliens completely isolated the hardcore Indy fans who were looking forward to archaeological digs and a lack of Shia LaBeouf.
- American Idol—The first few seasons were decent, but its repetitiveness has simply bored me out of my skull. Each season follows the same format: laugh at the bad people, mock their fashion sense, call in your vote, worship the final two, wonder if you’re witnessing the demise of music.
- Twilight—Sure, I like Twilight. I got into the series well after the second book came out, and by that time, my school was stuffed with little Edward-minions running around. When I told people, “I don’t like vampires,” a strange, maniacal look came over their faces. They leaned in close, breathing heavily, as they whispered, “You’ll LOVE it.” And sure, I really did like it. But I thought that after reading it, the meaning of life, the universe, and everything would have descended upon me and I would suddenly understand how Robert Pattinson styles his hair. The book was good, but it didn’t live up to its crazed fangirls’ rants.
- Lost—I’ve tried watching Lost, I really have. I made it about halfway through the first episode before I got bored. Maybe I just have a short attention span. I mean, I already knew what was going to happen: the plane crashes, lots of people die, the people the camera focuses on the most miraculously survive and are stranded on an island. If you think about it, the show is just a modern-day version of Gilligan’s Island. During the later seasons, I tried watching it again. What was up with TIME TRAVEL? That threw me for a loop.
So, Sparklers, what do you think the most overrated series are? Any that are here that you think meet the hype that surrounds them?
