It's the heart of barbeque season in the United States, a.k.a the most difficult time of year for vegetarians. There are grills everywhere, much of the Midwest smells like a meat processing plant, and you can't attend a baseball game or an amusement park without being tempted by the intoxicating scent of hot dogs.
At this difficult time, the vegetarians out there need a morale boost, and we're here to give it to you. Remember all the perks of a meatless diet:
You will never be asked to go to KFC
Though greasy and sometimes rat-infested, fast food restaurants do have their charms. They’re cheap; their kids' toys are cool; McDonald’s has made some of the world’s scariest commercials; and I can remember feeling a real sense of satisfaction upon finishing off half a dozen tacos at my local T-Bell years ago. Kentucky Fried Chicken is different. Eating a bucket of their wings is like ingesting a bunch of deep-fried skeletons, there’s nothing colorful or fun about the restaurant itself, and their “Famous Bowls” are the subject of one of the most famous standup jokes of the past several years (no link—it’s a little blue).
You eat for cheap
Whether at a grocery store or a restaurant, meat’s expensive. The next time you’re out to eat, compare prices for meat and veggie entrees. You're probably saving yourself $5 a meal, easy. If PETA wises up, they’ll design one of those “money saved” calculators like the kind used to encourage people to quit smoking.
You watch classic children's movies without a gnawing sense of guilt
Pity the carnivores who can't watch "Babe" or "Charlotte's Web" without feeling wracked with guilt.
You smell better
Being a vegetarian doesn’t mean you can omit basic hygiene from your routine, but some studies do confirm that vegetarians smell better. Yum. In hot summer weather, this could make quite a bit of difference when you're shimmying up to some cutie at the 7/11. Going the veggie route will ensure you're more cherry Slurpie treat than beef jerky surprise.
Think Babe looks delicious? Recently gone vegetarian and still pining for KFC Famous Bowls? We want to hear about it.
