And the Jimmy Goes To…
We're really sorry, everyone. Somehow we at SparkNotes neglected to tell you in advance about the first annual National High School Musical Theater Awards—better known as "Jimmys"—held just a few weeks ago. We should have done a whole slate of pre-show coverage, from rundowns of our favorite nominees, to profiles of co-hosts Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris, to lists of food to serve at your Jimmy parties. But we dropped the ball. All we can do is apologize and promise not to let it happen again.
Interestingly, only three awards were presented at this year's ceremony: Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Arts Education Program. Here's hoping that slate gets expanded soon. In addition to the Best Directing and Supporting Actor/Actress categories, here are a few other awards we think should be handed out:
- Best Performance By a Stagehand Who Wishes S/He Could Act
- Endurance Award for the Actor/Actress Who Keeps in Character Longest While Not On Stage
- Player Award for Person Who Has Made Out With the Most Members of the Cast (Amanda!)
- Enthusiasm Award for Loudest Applause/Guffaws/Outbursts by a Non-Performing Actor/Actress Sitting in the Audience
- Emerging Star Award for Quiet, Unassuming Student Who Is Suddenly Catapulted to Fame Thanks to His Astounding Turn as Riff in West Side Story
- Spirit Award for Best Chorus Composed Entirely of Football Players Looking to Fulfill an Elective Requirement
- Best Set-Strike Meltdown By A Cast Drama Queen
- Least Number of Misprints In A Playbill
- Critics' Award for Most Scathing Review Written by the Actor/Actress Passed Over for the Lead
And there won't be a dry eye in the house when they show the reel of all the high school showbiz legends who have passed on. It's always a poignant moment when we stop to consider the stars who have been forever taken from us by graduation.
Got any other ideas for theater awards? Which high school activities would you like to see honored with their own national awards? Let is know in the comments.
