The TV series Glee hasn't officially premiered yet, but we're sure it will be a huge hit. The show is set in an Ohio high school and features glee club kids—traditionally seen as the epitome of lame—giving fantastic performances and having a wonderful time.
The message is clear: chorus members, glee club singers, and madrigal performers have been underestimated. This got us to thinking about what other school activities we typically give short shrift. How could TV shows help reveal their hidden cool? We've got a few ideas:
A/V. Two initials with a slash between them worked for E/R for a zillion years, and there's no reason your school's audio-visual club can't get the same boost. In this inspirational show, nobody thinks the A/V club can get it together—or is even really sure what it is they do. But all that changes when, in the face of seemingly insurmountable external and intramural obstacles, they win an Oscar. (Well, maybe just a Fox Teen's Choice Award.)
Master Debaters. If you think debate kids are easy to pick on, try getting into it with one of them on international trade policy. At first, the popular kids on this show don't realize how unwise it is to challenge people who spend hours every day learning how to argue. But when the team gets a new coach (famed martial arts instructor Billy Blanks), the debaters really learn how to turn the tables—three minutes at a time.
Checkmate. This isn't your ordinary high school chess club. Sure, all the members are quite good-looking (even if nobody else at the school seems to notice), but the unusual thing is that the team is evenly divided by gender. That makes for a whole lot of pairing off, if you know what we mean, as battles between kings and queens become more than just metaphorical. When each budding master gains confidence going head-to-head against members of the opposite sex, they capture more than just each other's pieces.
Would you watch any of these shows, or do you prefer to stick to the more standard social stratification of Friday Night Lights? Let us know in the comments.
