You know that friend of yours who uses her Facebook status box to deliver up-to-the-minute bulletins on the painful disintegration of all of her personal relationships? What about the person who clogs up your newsfeed with unhinged emotional tirades addressed to no one in particular?
You can always “Hide” these people so you don’t have to waste precious seconds of every day hearing about how Shelley’s ex-bf Todd is “a TOTAL LIAR!.! WTF?!? Yll be srry1!” or what kind of lichen Chris would be, but a lot of us are looking for a more satisfying solution. This is where Lamebook comes in.
Publishing “the lamest” of Facebook, from status updates, to notes, to profile information, Lamebook is where you go for an outlet when you feel that your friends are abusing their right to unlimited self-disclosure. Users just snap a screenshot of the offending wall post or photo comment and submit it—then, should the editors deem it sufficiently hilarious, it’s up on Lamebook for the amusement and ridicule of anyone with an internet connection.
Is it mean? A lot of the time, yes. But it’s about time that we had a site like this to help rein in the really flagrant instances of Facebook abuse. Technology has advanced much faster than many people’s ability to figure out what they really shouldn’t be sharing, and sites like Lamebook are a fun way to set some standards for what people in your social network will and will not put up with.
Of course, the whole point of sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter is to share things. But the distance between telling people about an ongoing revolution in your country and telling everyone that you just ate breakfast and are going for a run would have to be measured in light years. The more people are aware of the possibility that their Facebook conversations could end up here, the less cluttered our newsfeeds will be. So spread the word and don’t be this guy.
Would you send a friend’s posts to Lamebook? Has anyone every submitted something of yours?
