Fashion trends are often weird. I mean, hello, Crocs, not to mention liquid leggings, the proliferation of positively Roman-esque sandals, and mumu-like maxi dresses. Generally speaking, the trends only look bad in hindsight—like that one time I glued a be-feathered butterfly to a cowboy hat (what was I thinking?). But I have to say one trend that's currently popping up on every starlet and in every magazine is pretty bizarre even in the present tense: the no-pants look.
Need visual proof? Check out this gallery of celebs and fashion types with M.I. A. pants. Two of the biggest culprits are Lady Gaga and Beyonce, both of whom gallivant around in crazy leotards with maybe a pair of tights and usually shoes that look insanely uncomfortable. Now, obviously these ladies are performers, and costume-y outfits are in their job description. But when regular people start rocking this trend on the streets (trust me, I've seen it firsthand), I must object. Shorts so short they verge on denim underwear, leotards on Sixth Ave—why?!?!
I don't care how great your legs look, if butt cleavage is visible, you need more fabric. Maybe I'm just a prude, but exposing the same amount of skin as you would on the beach seems, well, inadvisable for everyday life. Sudden drafts and leg stubble paranoia alone make going pantsless impractical. And adding tights to the mix does little to help—unless, that is, your summer look is Lost Extra from Chicago.
So what say you? Are pants and skirts so over, or is the no-pants trend as silly as it sounds?
