If you’ve been privately (or not-so-privately) pining away for the Jonas brothers, here’s some news that will interest you: Even the brothers’ mother thinks her boys might be, er, susceptible to temptation.
Or as this article's headline puts it, “Jonas mom believes sons could be seduced HOLYOMG!”
…Okay, maybe we added that last part.
We at SparkNotes give kudos to Mama Jonas, who responded to a question about the boys’ promise to remain chaste until marriage by saying,“They are men. They have desires. They have testosterone. If they make a mistake, I'm not going to hate them.” While not all parents agree on whether it’s appropriate for teenagers to be sexually active, this statement contains two smart sentiments that we can all get behind:
1) Though mistakes may be made, Mom and Dad shouldn’t go around hating their kids.
2) Testosterone is REAL. (I knew it!)
Meanwhile (at least as far as we know), Kevin, Nick, and Joe are all still keeping themselves under wraps until marriage. But with the three of them getting on in years, and no sign of a Jonas wedding on the horizon, we can’t help but wonder—how long does the purity pledge remain binding?
What happens if the Jo-Bros are still unmarried at thirty? Forty? SEVENTY?! And what of the chaste non-celebrities who, despite their best efforts, can’t get anyone to marry them? Are they doomed to a lifetime of celibacy? Because while there may be a logical argument for keeping the raging hormones of a sixteen-year-old beefcake at bay, a senior citizen who’s never had sex would be a sad sight, indeed.
What do you think: Are purity pledges a good way to promote abstinence? And if so, do they have an expiration date? Sound off in the comments.
